Went for a short run in the morning. Read two papers on using deep reinforcement learning for VNF placement. Still haven't found any work using a classification-based approach as a reference. My lecturer also called for a meeting to discuss our thesis topics in more detail. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon refining the dev diaries feature on my portfolio website by adding pagination and fixing several CSS issues.

Finished setting up my homelab, so I finally had a database to work with. I also wanted a portfolio project that actually depended on one, so I built dev diaries to document my journey in tech. The project started with AntiGravity and GitHub Copilot, but the architecture wasn't suitable for accessing the database through a Cloudflare Tunnel. I migrated it to Payload CMS instead. Getting it production-ready took longer than expected. I cleaned up the Docker setup, reduced the build time, deployed it, and added it to Uptime Kuma for monitoring.

Repurposed my old 2011 laptop into a home server. The SSD and RAM upgrades were still sufficient, but the hardware itself caused several issues during setup. The broken display forced me to use an external monitor. The legacy BIOS refused to boot from GPT, and Ubuntu kept recreating the partition table during installation. After several reinstalls, I finally got everything working with MBR. The initial stack consists of PostgreSQL, MQTT with WebSocket support, and Uptime Kuma. I also connected everything through a Cloudflare Tunnel to securely expose the services without opening my home network.

Update on Scho-Infinity: To improve availability, I deployed multiple on-premises servers to host database replicas. Two additional servers continuously synchronize with the primary database. HAProxy manages database connections and routes traffic between the primary and replica servers, providing failover when a node becomes unavailable.

Presented our final project in front of the APIE staff and all participants. Everything went smoothly. Went to Gacoan on a whim with a few friends afterward.

Update on Scho-Infinity: I used Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) to distribute traffic across multiple EC2 instances. I also thought of Auto Scaling Groups (ASG), but WireGuard's peer-to-peer architecture made automatic scaling unnecessarily complex. So, I deployed two fixed instances in the target group, each maintaining its own tunnel to the on-premises server. The setup supports both vertical and horizontal scaling, although adding or removing instances still requires manual configuration.

Deployed Scho-Infinity, a service for the APIE Advanced Camp homework, to an EC2 instance. The database is hosted on my on-premises server in Haneda, connected through a peer-to-peer WireGuard tunnel. The service is built with Next.js. Containerizing the application proved more troublesome than expected, so I temporarily opted for PM2 instead.

I miss her so much.

Tuesday

Went to the university's central library to continue reading papers for my 5G research. The internet connection was painfully slow despite sitting directly beneath an access point, likely due to heavy contention. I eventually gave up, closed my laptop, and spent the rest of the evening at a cafe with a friend until nightfall.

Monday

Went to the university's central library to read several papers for my 5G research and look for a research gap. Spent half an hour outside afterward reading Animal Farm. The sound of water flowing from the fountain into the pond, accompanied by birdsong, made for a quiet afternoon.

Monday

Reunited with a few high school friends. Spent the evening talking about anything and everything before one of them left for an internship.
