CCNA: Introduction to Networks

Cisco's Introduction to Networks (ITN) is the foundational curriculum for the CCNA track, focusing on how network infrastructure actually operates beneath daily Internet interactions. Across dozens of guided labs and Packet Tracer environments, the course breaks down networking from physical and data link protocols up through the transport and application layers. Key areas of focus include IPv4/IPv6 subnetting, switch and router initial configurations, Ethernet frame behavior, and the mechanics of end-to-end local and remote connectivity.

Before you can build complex systems or reason about scale, you need a mental model of the fundamentals that doesn't leak. For me, working through Introduction to Networks was about turning abstract protocol diagrams into mechanical muscle memory.

Most people encounter networking as an invisible utility—packets go in, responses come out. Working through the lower layers demystifies what happens in between: how switches make forwarding decisions using MAC address tables, how ARP bridges layer 2 and layer 3, and where latency or packet drops actually originate when configurations clash.

A large portion of the coursework revolved around hands-on simulation in Cisco Packet Tracer. Designing topology maps from scratch, calculating custom IPv4 subnet masks, managing IPv6 prefix allocations, and configuring initial access security across routers and switches provided the practical context that pure theory often misses. Troubleshooting a misconfigured default gateway or fixing a broken trunk link teaches you to read network state systematically rather than guessing.

Completing this course solidified the foundational layer of my technical path in networking and infrastructure, setting the baseline for subsequent work in routing protocols, switching architecture, and modern programmable networks.
